6 Ways to Get Back in The Groove After Your Holiday Haze

Feeling sad that the holidays are over?  I usually feel a bit deflated as I pack away our holiday decor and start the gift exchanging and bill sorting process – but not this year!

This year I am excited about keeping the spirit of miracles (like the ones you might experience during the holidays), in my life!  It’s possible (and simple) when you are clear about what matters most to you and you give up trying to make things happen in exchange for letting them happen for you (this is the best gift exchange you will ever give to yourself)!  Let me give you a few examples of opportunities and miracles that happened over my holiday break…

When I was planning my 2017 business goals I didn’t give in to only setting goals where I could see how they would happen.  Instead I stuck to a what I want to happen plan without self-judgment over not always being able to identify an exact plan for manifesting my goals.  Over the break I had lunch with a former colleague and mentor of mine and shared some of my goals.  Instantly she connected me with several sources (sources I never would have expected her to have) and ideas to move forward with several of my goals.  Often I find business solutions when I am in a social frame of mind – go figure!

I went ice-skating at Rockefeller Center with my family and my sister’s family.  Thanks to a series of bad-decisions made with the best intention for avoiding city hustle and bustle, our families got separated.  We waited over 2 hours on line to skate and once we were the next family to get on the ice, my sister and her family finally make it to Rockefeller Center only to be about 2 hours behind us on line!  I just said to myself “if we are meant to skate together, a way will find us and if not, there’s a bigger benefit for all of us at play – let’s see how this will get better.”  My husband spotted an NYC police officer and asked if he would be willing to help (a long-shot for sure – talk about throwing a “Hail Mary”)!  Well, this angel of a police officer helped our families unite and not only did our families get to be together, we skated at twilight and witnessed a couple get engaged!  Focused, calm and open to miracles – oh boy, that was a great experience of holiday magic!

These are just 2 examples – there are many more including re-connecting with a family member, our holiday party going from an unmanageable number of people to a perfect number, a new tradition started with my best friend from childhood who moved out of state several years ago – and list goes on.

Yes, I will be keeping this spirit with me all year for sure!

Being clear about what you want is the first step in conditioning yourself to recognize opportunities and miracles all the time – every day!  Want to strengthen your opportunity and miracle recognizing muscles?  Here are 6 ways to get back in the groove after your holiday haze…

For each of these 6 areas of life, get clear about 1 thing you would really like to experience …

1.  Mind – what is one thing you would like to learn?  Maybe, it’s just about developing better focus this year – check out mindful meditation

2.  Body – what is one thing you can do to ease into a new way to nurture and care for your body?  Maybe 15 minute stretches in the AM, or buy a package of facials or massage sessions, or cut out 1 piece of no-good-for-you food every month. Again, let small gestures and small investments of your time give way to bigger ideas and more latitude with your schedule.

3.  Spirit – what would you like to do to fill up your “happy” tank (something that doesn’t involve self-medicating in any way)?  Maybe it’s the obvious – like attending religious services or maybe it’s just reading or listening to something that lifts you up, or takes you deep into understanding what having “faith/courage/happiness/empathy/etc.” truly means.  Maybe it’s about hanging out with people who just make you laugh.  Do 1 thing that will lift your spirits any time you are feeling deflated.  This alone can be a huge step in preventing burnout!

4.  Fun – what is fun to you?  Make plans and get “fun” scheduled on your calendar.  It always helps to have something fun to look forward to.  Get your fun calendar filled up especially for January!

5.  Home – what would you be happy to see in your space at home?  Winter is a great time of year to get organized which includes tossing anything that you don’t LOVE – even if it’s only 1 thing each year that you will expunge from your responsibility – a chain around you that you will break.  Things we don’t love that are in our possession weigh us down – get rid of it!

6.  Work – what would you be happy to see in your space at work?  Ditto from the home sentiments.  Think about getting rid of old files (on-line and in your space).  Plus, clean your desk – and maybe get a plant or a picture of someplace you would like to visit.  Shift the energy easily be rearranging where things are located in your workspace – shake up the energy!!

After you are clear what you want to experience in each of these areas, think of 2 small things you can do that will get you a few steps ahead in experiencing that thing as vividly as you can imagine.  After you do those 2 small things, think of 2 more things, and keep going!  Just let each small thing open you up to bigger and bigger ideas.  Sometimes, your ideas will come from other people – keep your conversation with others on what you want to accomplish.

Happy opportunity and miracle recognizing New Year to You!
