Do you believe that success comes easily when you have some special talent or ability?  Do you believe that motivation is key?  Do you believe it is a by-product of hard work?  Early in my career, I believed those things.  Actually, I still believe success is possible with any of those things – it’s also exhausting, not fun, and can leave you vulnerable for feeling like you ultimately don’t matter anyway no matter how well you get paid.

 

In my many years as an HR executive I have witnessed countless people who were facing performance counseling become upset about not being valued because of…

 

  • what they could do (but of course, weren’t being utilized to their full ability)
  • they are self-motivated (“My boss pays no attention to me and still I get my work done”)
  • how hard they work (they felt they worked hard – why didn’t anyone else?)

 

“How dare other people not see all these wonderful things about me!” was the bubble fixated over their head while they were in their performance counseling meeting.

 

Often, what people fail to absorb is that what you do is never more important than how you impact others.  What you do will never give you power – only this will…

…it’s what you believe.

 

Your beliefs are what you trust, have confidence in, or hold as truth.  In essence it’s about what you have faith in – good or bad.  Faith to the positive is aligning with your hopes – the good you believe could happen.  Faith to the negative is aligning with your fears – the bad you believe could happen.  So positive or negative, when we indulge what we believe we are happier than a pig in shit.  And “shit” is truly what we get when we believe from a place of fear.

 

So “practicing faith” in essence is practicing what you believe. Makes sense to get clear about your positive beliefs (what you actually want vs. what you don’t want), if you want to enjoy true success – doesn’t it?  Positive beliefs are what enable a true and sustainable sense of happiness.

Relying on ability, motivation, and hard work is attempting to earn success the hard way plus it doesn’t guarantee results that would be of value to you or a lasting sense of fulfillment.  If you want to enjoy sustainable fulfillment shift your focus from relying on…

 

  • your ability/aptitude (what you can do) to your attitude (what you believe)
  • your motivation (what you wish for yourself) to your intention (what you wish for others)
  • your hard work (what you actually do) to your energy (what you give off to others)

 

Demonstrating that you have an ability to do something, have the self-motivation to do it, and are willing to work hard are nice qualities.  But let’s face it – nice isn’t always kind.  Nice by definition is obsolete, pleasing, agreeable, socially acceptable, appropriate (my eyes are rolling right now – just so you know).  Kind by definition is loving, of a helpful nature, to give pleasure or relief, attentive, considerate.  Nice just doesn’t ruffle any feathers – kind does what is necessary to make a difference.  In the workplace, nice makes you a dime a dozen!  You’re brand of nice doesn’t guarantee your value, nor may it align with what’s required for the job you have, or match the culture and values of the organization, or peers.

 

On the other hand, people will always value your good attitude, intentions, and energy.  Even if you are full of mediocre skills, a so/so work ethic and are motivated by things that no one else around you can relate to – you will be more valued.  Why?  Because attitude trumps aptitude, intention trumps motivation, and energy trumps hard work.  There are limited exceptions to this truth.  For example, if you have hard to find technical skills, specialized knowledge, etc. But needing that stuff for most jobs isn’t the norm and when someone with all that stuff comes along AND operates from more positive beliefs you’ll be out of there as soon as your manager can convince HR and Legal to agree to get rid of you.

 

Shift your focus for yourself.

 

In the long-run it won’t be enough for you to truly feel a lasting sense of fulfillment from what you do for a living.  There’s that word again – do.  Would you rather do for a living or believe for a living?

 

Your true sense of value and self-worth is experienced when you get to experience  what you believe actually making a positive impact for yourself AND others.  Shifting from the thought that what you do/can do should be enough to warrant your value and worth to others also enables you the possibility of something else….

 

…it’s happiness!

 

Happiness is what inevitably leads to success – sustainable fulfillment – no effort required!
