Not happy with “your job” title? You might like “your work” title much better…

The title of “your work” is 1 word.  This 1 word is a title instantly earned by anyone who makes the shift from doing “their job” to doing “their work”.  This collective title commands more power than any “job” title – including that of CEO.

How can 1 title accurately honor the value you bring – the value anyone brings – even when we perform so many different jobs?

It’s creator.

George Lois said…“You can be cautious or you can be creative (but there’s no such thing as a cautious creative).”

We are all creators whether we realize it or not.  Yet our medium (art, spreadsheets, reports, ideas, tangible things, etc.) is not what makes us so.  We are creators when we become aware of the intangible feeling we enable another to experience which subsequently opens them up to feel/think/do/be something that aligns them with joy/happiness/accomplishment – that evolves their consciousness.  Maybe we enable them to feel more confident making a decision, to care about something they didn’t care about before, to experience wisdom and peace despite a problem they are facing, etc.

Are you aware how your contributions (and the manner in which you perform them) enable another to feel?  If you’re not, then you risk creating a feeling for them you probably don’t intend and one that is probably going to put you on a fast track to relationship issues with others at work (and in life).

The path to loving your work starts with acknowledging that your job alone will never sustain your sense of fulfillment.  Clinging to a job title and 5-7 key responsibilities alone will only make you cautious in what you do and how you do it.  That strategy will enable you to fit in at best – not stand out.

True creators don’t necessarily “seek” to stand out – they just do – simply because they embrace what makes them unique and how that impacts others – that makes them stand out among the many peers they may have who also perform the same job as them.  So how do you become aware of what makes you unique among your peers?  In other words, what is the difference between a cautious and a creative?

It’s one secret ingredient…

I’ll share that with you in the next blog post.

In the meantime, explore what you might enable another to feel/think/do/be that aligns them with joy/happiness/accomplishment.
