What a lazy river taught me about getting what I want in life – here’s how you can get what you want in your life too – maybe even for free!

Last week my husband took some vacation time and we treated our kids to a bunch of different day trips.  One day at the beach, another day with friends, another at the pool, another bowling, mini-golfing and just some goofin’ off.  And on one day we went to a water park in Pennsylvania – this was a magical day for many reasons…

A few things were ideal – the weather was perfect (everything depends on the weather – doesn’t it?), the park wasn’t crowded (turns out some kids in Pennsylvania went back to school a bit earlier than we did in New Jersey – no lines!), and everyone was into it and in a good mood (not easy to get your kids to agree on activities when they are 5.5 years apart and opposite genders).

The look on their faces when we went down the slides together in 1 giant family-sized tube left an indelible imprint on my mind and my heart.  My daughter’s expression of pure joy and excitement with an imaginary bubble over her head that read “again!” before the ride was even over, and my teenage son’s smile that fully exposed his braces practically back to his molars coupled with a high pitched scream over the anticipation of the drops, twists and turns of the slide was priceless!  I’m sure it was priceless for them to see me and my husband go down a massive water slide on our bellies that made my husband go airborne and a major splash of water to my face that left mascara tracks running down my face.

Of course, we didn’t start out the day this adventurous or uninhibited – we started out on the lazy river.  No kid was initially convinced the place wasn’t too baby-ish for them, I had no initial plan to get my hair or face wet (silly me!), and my husband was up for a “lazy river nap session” after the long drive – so the lazy river it was.

On that initial float around the park, I had a breakthrough… (yes, even at the water park on a vacation day in August my mind does not stop observing ways to gain clarity, confidence and conviction to experience a sustainable sense of fulfillment in life).

The lazy river taught me how to get what I wanted in life – here’s what happened…

All 4 of us had our own inner tube – but of course – we weren’t even around the first bend when my protective mamma instinct kicked in – I “had to” make sure I could see both my kids (you never know where some portal to an alternate Universe exists on a lazy river and it’s only activated when a Mom loses sight of her kid).  In the moment of realizing I couldn’t see my young daughter, I tensed up.  Looking all over I noticed she was actually several people ahead of me.  I started paddling to catch up to her but I realized I wasn’t moving anywhere.  “I must be caught in a current”  I thought (right, on a “lazy” river)?  There it was – the insanity of my thought – it couldn’t be me that was inhibiting my ability to move forward – it had to be the current, the tube, or that floating band-aid keeping me from my baby!  At least at this point in my life I’ve evolved enough to catch my totally insane thoughts quickly after I think them – so I got that going for me – which is nice!  The truth I remembered, is that when you are tense, panicked, and working from a place of fear – you go nowhere – even in a system designed to pull you forward! – DUH!

In that moment I remembered to practice what was taught to me and that I preach to others – calm down, breathe, and know that it’s you that’s keeping you stuck (after all, this isn’t the ocean – there is no riptide – it’s a freakin’ lazy river – with a built in current designed to take you forward)!

A lazy river works exactly the same way that energy in the universe works!

Once you get clear what you want, and stop blaming everyone else around you for your stuckedness (is that a word?), and calm down (stop paddling so frantically), you will naturally move to your desired destination.

I was reminded of what my mentors Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood (Co-authors of “The Passion Test:  The Effortless Path To Discovering Your Life Purpose”) always say:

“When you are clear, what you want will show up in your life and only to the extent you are clear.”   “And calm about it” (I added the calm part to the end of their quote).

I was already clear what I wanted, so I calmed down (that meant letting go of HOW what I wanted had to show up – i.e. paddling frantically – working so hard – too hard!), let go, and let “the universe” (God in my case), steer the tube.

I relaxed my tightly tensed up body, stop frantically paddling, and within less than 1 second I was back in the flow, (Ohmm, Chanti, Ohmmmm!), drifting effortlessly toward my daughter.  Within seconds her dainty fingers were clutched around my big toe – only I was a bit more evolved (and much more relaxed), than the mom she had not even 2 minutes before when I helped her into her inner tube.  After that reminder breakthrough it was just effortless to relax, have fun – and yes – let my hair get wet and my mascara run.

This week I have a renewed sense of self, faith in the energy and power of the universe and conviction for my work.  And I can’t wait to share it with all of you!
