We all have moments when we fantasize about quitting our jobs. But when the occasional fantasy becomes a chronic feeling – we become transformed into a Ph.D. credentialed master at noticing more and more evidence that our job or workplace is fakakt’d. When that happens, it pushes us closer to the brink of quitting on the spot.
Is that you – a master at noticing evidence that your job or place of work is fakakt’d? How advanced are you in this? Which of these statements most closely resembles what you’d say about your desire to quit…
- “That’s it – I’m outta here!”
- “F*ck this place!”
- “F*ck you, you f*ck’n F*CK!” (the “you” here may refer to the boss, the customers, your co-workers, the work environment, the job itself or any/all of the above)
If you picked #1 you might be at risk for noticing more and more offenses that seem to be pushing you to the brink of signing a resignation letter.
If you picked #2 you might not be quite ready to sign a resignation letter and throw it at your boss (not without another job lined up), but you probably have your resume out there. You might also be scaring the crap out of someone you love that you might come home very early at any given day (probably smoking a cigar and feeling no pain from your middle-of-the-day celebratory drinks because you quit on the spot even though you don’t have another job lined up).
If you picked #3 however – oy! Just call out “MEDIC!!” It’s imperative you get yourself some healing – stat! Your view of the situation may be so damaged that you can’t make a clear and confident decision about what to do on your own. In the process of not getting help, you’re no doubt causing harm to others – those who probably deserve it – but to innocent by-standers as well.

There are a few components to get clear about when you’re deciding if it makes sense to just quit your job without another means of income or employment.
The first thing to do is to practice building “emotional wealth”.
“Emotional wealth building” is about actively building your emotional stamina so that you can cope with your work situation as it is now. This is a time to nurture yourself – big time! You need a clear head to figure out your next move and to know what will nurture you until you get to the next happy place dream job, hit the lottery, retire or just quit your fakakta job. You also need this stamina to be able see how you will be “bigger/better/faster/stronger” as a result of this experience.
Decide right now (write it out) – what you will do EVERY DAY to give yourself a break from the current troubles of your job – to heal, recover and build your strength again?
Here are some ideas:
- give yourself more sleep
- do something fun you like to do
- learn something new you always wanted to try
- give extra fun time to your kids or pets
- actively relax (low effort, active activities vs. “doing nothing”)
- spend time with people you enjoy being with
Do NOT:
- talk about your job to anyone that can’t directly help you address anything (don’t complain about your job while spending time with your friends – don’t talk about their job troubles either).
- self-medicate (a nice bottle of wine with dinner is great once in a while – but not every night)!
- zone out on video games every night – excessive video game playing (anything more than 1 hour a day) actually lowers your consciousness
- think about work during off work hours (try not to engage in work if you can avoid it – i.e. checking email)
Daily emotional wealth building enables you to become capable of making an informed decision about whether or not it makes sense to just quit without having another job or means of income.
So decide now what you will do daily.
